SDG 11 — Sustainable Cities and Communities

The central platform of the Community Resilient ThermoHome Initiative

The Community Resilient ThermoHome Initiative places SDG 11 — Sustainable Cities and Communities at the center of an integrated humanitarian and sustainable-development model.

The programme recognizes that a dignified, resilient home is more than a physical structure. It can become the foundation for healthier families, protected children, stronger communities, environmental sustainability, education, social development and future economic opportunity.

From this central platform, the initiative contributes to interconnected Sustainable Development priorities, including:

  • Poverty reduction — addressing the underlying conditions that keep vulnerable families in cycles of poverty and vulnerability.
  • Health and well-being — creating healthier and more resilient living environments, particularly for vulnerable families and children.
  • Gender equality and women's empowerment — supporting meaningful participation and opportunities for women within families and communities.
  • Water and sanitation — promoting responsible water use and healthier community environments.
  • Affordable and clean energy — reducing energy vulnerability through energy-efficient and climate-responsive housing.
  • Decent work and economic opportunity — supporting local skills, employment, productive capacity and pathways toward community economic development.
  • Sustainable communities — creating integrated community environments rather than addressing housing as an isolated individual intervention.
  • Climate action — strengthening resilience to climate-related conditions while pursuing energy and emissions benefits.
  • Environmental sustainability — promoting responsible construction, resource efficiency, cleaner environments and long-term environmental stewardship.
  • Education and child development — helping create stable community environments in which children and young people can grow, learn and develop their abilities.
  • Partnerships for sustainable development — bringing together governments, foundations, charitable organizations, corporations, philanthropic supporters, communities and international partners around a shared humanitarian objective.

An Intergenerational Approach

The programme's development pathway can be expressed simply:

Vulnerable family → dignified resilient home → healthier environment → children protected and supported → education and development → stronger community → future economic opportunity → intergenerational poverty reduction.

The purpose is therefore not simply to provide one house to one family. The objective is to help establish sustainable communities in which vulnerable families can develop socially, economically and environmentally over time, creating better conditions for their children and future generations.

A Platform for Partnership

The initiative is designed as an open platform for collaboration. Different partners may contribute according to their own mandates, priorities and capacities while participating in the same broader humanitarian vision.

Government institutions may contribute through public policy and community development. Foundations and charitable organizations may support vulnerable families, children, health, education or social development. Environmental and climate organizations may support resilience, energy efficiency and environmental sustainability. Corporations may contribute through responsible investment, technology, employment, materials or social responsibility programmes. Philanthropic and individual supporters may contribute to the humanitarian mission.

Each partner can support the area most closely aligned with its own purpose while contributing to the larger objective:

building resilient and sustainable communities where vulnerable families and future generations have the opportunity to live with dignity, health, security, education and hope.
